How to Make a Fresh Holly Wreath for Christmas
I love making wreaths from clippings that I forage from the yard or public spaces. Now that I live in a place where holly actually grows, I knew that this year I wanted to make a holly Christmas wreath for our front door.
Materials for Making A Holly Wreath
- grapevine wreath form
- fresh holly sprigs
- floral wire
- gardening gloves
- wire cutters
You'll definitely want a pair of gardening gloves to do this project. Holly leaves are sharp. But even with just very inexpensive rubbery gardening gloves, those thorny greens weren't a problem.
Start by cutting a length of floral wire. Wrap one end around the grapevine wreath base to secure it in place. Place a spring of holly on the wreath form, and secure it in place by winding the wire around the holly and the wreath form.
Layer the next sprig on the form, a couple inches further along. Wind the wire around the holly sprigs and the form.
Continue adding sprigs of holly, using the wire to secure the holly in place, until the entire wreath form is covered.
I didn't need to work hard to make a nice, full wreath shape. The holly leaves naturally stick out every which way and create that beautiful wreath shape.
My holly didn't have any red berries, so I added some red felt balls to give the wreath a little extra pop of color. I love it both ways!
