This is my third year of my project to recreate all of the pubs of St Albans out of Gingerbread! This year, I built gingerbread house versions of The Six Bells, The Mermaid, and The Beehive.
This brings the number of pubs I've made out of gingerbread to 12--and I still have SO MANY MORE wonderful pubs to recreate in coming years. St Albans has a LOT of amazing pubs. You can check out the pubs I've already made on these posts:
Year 1: Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, The Boot, The Lower Red Lion, and The White Hart Tap
Year 2: The Robin Hood, and The Goat
I don't give the pubs advance notice that I'm making a gingerbread replica, I just show up with the gingerbread house one day in December! I get to have a fun, creative gingerbread project, and get to give back to the pubs that help to make our community so wonderful and welcoming.
The Six Bells Gingerbread Pub
The Six Bells is a gorgeous 16th century pub in the St Michaels village section of St Albans.
I take some design liberties when making the gingerbread version of a pub, but it's always recognizable!
Fishpool street is pretty narrow, so it isn't the easiest to get a good picture of the gingerbread pub in front of the actual pub, but the drone shot in the video gives a better view.
Successfully delivered and surprised the pub owners! I'm working together with the Herts Young Homless charity, and the Six Bells graciously donated their final pub quiz revenue of the year to the organization as a thank you for the gingerbread house.
The Mermaid Gingerbread Pub
I thought making The Mermaid out of gingerbread was going to be simple, until I looked at the overhead view on google maps and discovered that I would have to do rather a lot of math to figure out the proper angles for that askew roof.
This English-and-Anthropology major persisted, though! And it was worth it to honor this fabulous 19th century St Albans pub.
The Mermaid is famous for having a great collection of ciders and perrys, and always has a great collection of ales, too.
The Mermaid gave away the gingerbread house as the grand prize in its weekly pub quiz! The winners reported that it was delicious.
The Beehive Gingerbread Pub
I did coordinate with The Beehive a bit this year, because we wanted to work together to use the gingerbread house as a raffle prize to raise money for Herts Young Homeless.
It was a great success, and I hope we can continue and grow the fundraising efforts next year!
Another successful delivery!
Gingerbread House Decorating Party at The Goat Inn
This was also our second year hosting our annual friends and family gingerbread house decorating party at The Goat. I didn't make another replica of the pub, but did make a BIG A-frame gingerbread house for anyone to help decorate to give to the pub as a thank-you for being such fabulous hosts for our party. The bartenders reported that it was delicious. ;-) See you next year!
