DIY Felt Mistletoe
Mistletoe is such a classic Christmas decoration--even if you don't follow the tradition of kissing under it. Mistletoe's green leaves and white berries are absolutely beautiful. But real mistletoe can be hard to find. This felt mistletoe ornament can be used year after year, though.
Materials for Mistletoe Ornament:
- green felt
- brown floral wire (the paper-wrapped kind is best)
- small white felt balls or pom poms
- low temperature glue gun
Cut three (or more, if you want a fuller look) lengths of the floral wire, each approximately 12" long.
Gather the wire at the center, and twist together just a bit (one or two twists).
Pull one length of wire out of the bundle, and continue twisting the rest of the wires together (again, one or two good twists). Pull out a second strand of wire, and continue twisting the rest. Follow this pattern until you are left with just two wire branches in the center stem.
Create more small branches on each wire branch by folding the wire over itself and twisting small sections. (See the video for more detail on how to do this.)
Trim away any bits of wire that look too long after you've made your branches.
Cut long leaf mistletoe leaf shapes out of green felt. They're kind of teardrop shaped, but I like to leave a flat bit at the end of my leaves to help me glue them to the stem. It's harder if you cut a full point at the end of the teardrop shape.
Use a low temperature hot glue gun to glue the felt mistletoe leaves to the wire stems.
Add white berries to your felt mistletoe. I used needle felted felt balls, but you could easily use white craft pom poms, too.
There's my felt mistletoe, ready to hang on the tree!
I first made some felt mistletoe years ago when I decorated my daughters' playhouse for Christmas.
I love having felt mistletoe in my Christmas decorations! Where would you hang yours?
