A balmy summer night, twinkling fireflies, good food, good friends, and a movie on the lawn. What could be better? That was the inspiration for the Firefly Theater for the latest issue of Festivities Magazine.
I love to read. I've spent a huge portion of my life with my nose deep in a book and my mind deeply immersed in marelously imagined worlds. It's no surprise, then, that I have a particular affection for parties with a literary inspiration.
I made two groom's cakes last week. Sort of. The cakes weren't actually for a wedding, but a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Unicon, the company my husband works for. The two founders, Blake and Franz, are technologists and engineers, yes, but cowboys at heart. We wanted to do something special for them at the anniversary party, something playful, and Patience, my friend and the HR director at the company, came up with the idea of a "groom's" cake for each of them.
Balloons make people happy. Give a child a balloon and watch her face light up with delight and joy. Big or small, any balloon is grand. But I think I like the giant, 36" round balloons especially because they make me feel like a kid again, gazing up and the practically magical, colorful orb floating above me.
I love trifles. Those layers of fruit, cake, whipped cream, pastry cream...whatever you want to add, really. They're so pretty, so fresh, so downright delicious. And the awesomeness factor is increased exponentially when you make miniature trifles.
