I'm just going to put this out there: I love Harry Potter! Oh, you're not surprised? Fair enough. I'm in good company. So I jumped at the chance to make some fun party elements for my friend Nicole's daughter's Luna Lovegood themed birthday party. Like these Luna Lovegood inspired magic wands for each of the guests.
Aren't they pastel and perfect and quirky and dreamy, just like Luna?
Just look at this dreamy shot from the party! This photo was taken by the amazing Nicole Gould from Million Dollar $mile Celebration. Swoon!
I had so much fun making these wands for the party. Nicole wanted to stick with a dreamy pastel color palette.
Crystals and pastels and glitter... it just feels right for Luna Lovegood, doesn't it?
Luna Lovegood (from Harry Potter) Inspired Magic Wands Tutorial
Materials for the Luna Lovegood Magic Wands Tutorial:
- curly willow sticks
- pastel acrylic paint
- polyurethane spray
- sandpaper
- quartz crystals
- glitter
- rhinestones
- 22 gauge wire
Nicole found these curly willow sticks at Hobby Lobby in the floral section. I loved their quirky, bent shapes for this project! It just seems like something Luna would like, doesn't it? I cut the large branches down to wand size using my circular saw, and sanded the edges, but the branches were pretty easy to break by hand, too.
And the light blonde color (almost white) was fabulous for painting. It only took one coat of acrylic craft paint to cover the pale branches well.
Look at those lovely colors!
Once the colored paint had dried, I gave the wands a coat of polyurethane spray to make the coating more durable and shiny. While the polyurethane was still tacky, I sprinkled the wands with some extra fine glitter to add some extra sparkle.
Once the painted wands were dry, I used my hot glue gun to attach at least one quartz crystal to the end of each wand. Sometimes I wrapped the crystal with some silver wire, too, to add an extra decorative element as well as help keep the crystals securely in place.
I used my hot glue gun to add some rhinestone and pearl embellishments. I also used my hot glue gun and glitter to make some sparkly, raised designs on some of the wands, especially at the handle.
