I knew I wanted to hang flying keys from our trunk door for the Harry Potter trunk or treat, but it turns out that even decorative keys are expensive, and too small for what I had in mind.
But I found the perfect solution for making these DIY key decorations! Can you guess what I made them out of?
And the whole craft was SO SIMPLE! Fast, too. I like that kind of craft.
The keys swung and twisted nicely in teh breeze, really making them look like they were flying around. It was perfect!

Harry Potter Flying Keys Decorations Tutorial
Materials for Harry Potter Flying Keys Decorations:
- plastic bubble wands
- cardstock
- spray paint
When I saw these bubble wands, I immediately thought they looked like the tops of ornate keys, and it didn't take much to make my vision come to life.
There was an awkward bend (for a key, appropriate for a bubble wand) near the decorative top section, so I just cut that part off, and then glued the straight piece directly onto the decorative top piece. I cut key teeth out of cardstock, and glued that to the back of the plastic key shaft.
I used silver and copper colored spray paints to finish the transformation.
And to fly? They just needed some black thread and a light breeze.
